1. New MP3000 Announcement
On September 20th, IBM announced a new series of S/390 servers, the Multiprise 3000 (announcement # 199-240, 299-269, 299-271). This is an unusual series of processors because they will be marketed primarily by IBM business partners and because they provide a different pricing structure for IBM software. Instead of using processor groups and MSU ratings for GLC or PSLC pricing, the MP 3000 machines use GOLC, Growth Opportunity License Charges. The new pricing structure can result in a reduction of 35-40% in software costs compared to current S/390 pricing. I’m hearing great stories from people who are evaluating these processors and finding extraordinary savings. This offering is directed at the medium-sized sites and provides easier and less expensive growth options for application growth or new applications. I’ll have more in the next newsletter about how ISVs are treating the MP3000s. The three new models are:

MIPS estimates are available to subscribers of Cheryl Watson’s TUNING Letter. Electronic subscribers received the MIPS estimates yesterday. Print subscribers may send an email to Doni Richardson at admin@watsonwalker.com with their company name and address for a return email with the MIPS.
2. SURVEY
I’d like to ask your help in completing a survey. I’ll publish the results in a future Cheryl’s List, but would also like to use the information in some articles I’m working on. Hardware vendors, software vendors, or consultants who have customers who might not be on the list could help out a lot by submitting responses multiple times, once per site. I’m anxiously awaiting the results, but will wait until next Wednesday (November 17th) to tally them. So please respond within the next few days if possible. I REALLY appreciate your help in this! You can either reply and quote this with your responses or print it and fax it to: 630-604-5465 (this is my eFax number which comes directly to my email and not to our office). My email id is cheryl@watsonwalker.com.
Note: If you want to respond after the date of November 17th 1999, we still welcome your contribution, although your answers may not be used in tabulating the results shown in the Cheryl’s List #33.
