1.  About Cheryl Watson’s Tuning Letter 2010 No. 3

In our last Cheryl’s List (#142), I included the following item:

If you’re interested in the new hardware announcements, be there on Tuesday to see the sessions set aside before the actual announcement. At the moment, these are called “System z Update #1” through “System z Update #5” (sessions 7585, 7538, 7540, 7545, and 8141 respectively, with 8141 being given on Thursday). Fuller descriptions will be available at a later time.

SHARE just sent out a link that contains more detailed descriptions:

2.  Cheryl Watson’s CPU Charts

There are always two steps in producing our CPU Chart. The first step is to create the Excel spreadsheets for the new processors and the new MIPS by workload. The second step is to analyze the impact of the new MIPS in relation to the old MIPS, to compare workloads, analyze pricing, and analyze the MSUs. Because the analysis normally takes a week or two (and because I’ll be attending SHARE next week), we decided to send out the CPU Chart in two steps. The basic charts, without detailed analysis were mailed to subscribers today. I’ll be working on the analysis over the next couple of weeks and will resend the CPU Chart with the analysis included. This newest CPU Chart contains 630 processors or logical processor configurations.

The CPU Charts are automatically sent to Tuning Letter subscribers, and are included as part of the subscription fee. Please note that distribution of the Charts is restricted to the number of sites licensed by the subscription. Additionally, for the CPU Charts, we now offer a corporate-wide rate for non-subscribing companies who wish to distribute the charts to all of their representatives. See the order form on our Web site for pricing.

Stay Tuned!
