SHARE Conference in San Jose
Now that we have Tuning Letter 2
016 No. 4 behind us, Cheryl and I are busy working on our presentations for SHARE in San Jose that starts on March 5th. I’m aiming to achieve one of my lifetime ambitions – to have at least ONE of my presentations finished before I arrive at the conference (where would we be without in-flight wifi?). - 3/6, Mon, 10:30-11:30 am, EXECUforum – Mainframe Software Costs – Taming the Beast. Hot technologies come and go, but one of the topics that is consistently on the top 5 list of any CIO is how to control software costs. In this session we describe how we got to this place, and list practical steps that you can take to help your company get the maximum value from your mainframe.
- 3/7, Tue, 11:00-12:00 pm, EXECUforum – Mainframe Performance and You. Some cars have tiny 0-60 times, others have huge top speeds, and others barely sip their fuel. The job of the modern IT department is to provide the IT equivalent of all of these rolled into one. This session shows how Performance is the common thread to meeting all of these objectives.
- 3/10, Fri, 10:00-11:00 pm, Room 210H – Session 20524 – The Cheryl and Frank zRoadshow. In this session, we present our distillation of interesting events in the z world since the last SHARE conference. We will provide valuable lessons from our customers’ experiences and present nuggets of invaluable information gleaned from many of the best current SHARE sessions.
Note that the first two sessions are at the EXECUforum which runs in parallel with the main SHARE conference and is aimed at IT executives. If your executives will be attending the EXECforum, ask them to drop by and say hello.
New IBM Software Pricing Anouncement
Also, while we are here – a topic that is near and dear to every mainframer’s heart – software licensing! We hope that you saw IBM’s recent announcement (217-093) ‘Multi-Version Measurement replaces Single Version Charging for eligible z/OS and z/VSE software programs‘. Single Version Charging (SVC) has been around for a long time, and hopefully all our readers are familiar with it. Basically, SVC allows you to have two versions of selected software products installed, but you will only be charged for one of the versions. This is intended to allow customers to migrate from one version to another without being financially penalized during the migration period (normally a maximum of 12 months, depending on the product). Multi-Version Measurement (MVM) replaces SVC and removes the requirement for the migration to be completed within 12 months. As with all of these things, the devil is in the details, but at first sight, this looks like a positive development. If you are responsible for software contracts or for software management or migration, take a few minutes to review the announcement to determine how it will impact you.
