We just published the latest 153-page issue of Cheryl Watson’s Tuning Letter, available to subscribers on our publications site. As usual, we aimed to have a mix of articles, with some covering important upcoming changes in z/OS 2.5, and others getting into more detail about functions that have been with us for a while, but that you might not be exploiting. Hopefully you and your colleagues will find information in here to benefit you (by making your job a little easier or more interesting) and your company (by helping you get the best value for your company’s money). Specifically, we have:
- Information about upcoming changes in WLM in z/OS 2.5. Our WLM Service Definition Coefficient Changes article provides background information about WLM service definition coefficients for those that don’t have experience with this aspect of z/OS. It also contains valuable planning and implementation information, to help you achieve a smooth transition to the changed coefficient values introduced by z/OS 2.5.
- Todd Havekost’s latest article. This one describes the experiences of one of his clients when they moved from using System-Managed Duplexing of their Db2 lock structure, to using the newer Asynchronous Db2 Lock Duplexing capability. Todd not only shows the expected direct benefits (lower MSUs, better response times), but he also delves into some of the unexpected indirect benefits for other CF exploiters. If you are using System-Managed Duplexing for your Db2 lock structure, you should consider this a must-read. Better response times and lower MSUs – what’s not to like about that?
- One of the changes in z/OS 2.5 is a restructure of RMF into two separate chargeable z/OS components. Our What RMF’s Restructure Means To You article helps you understand what has changed, where the various RMF functions have ended up, and how the change will impact you, both technically and financially.
- We are observing a growing number of clients making the transition to at least one of IBM’s Tailored Fit Pricing options. News for Tailored Fit Pricing Customers describes a recent change to z/OS and SCRT to make it easier to manage the relationship between LPARs and the IBM pricing option they are using. We highly encourage our TFP customers to use this capability, but the transition from how you do this today, to how you could do it in the future has a few wrinkles – this article will help you get there as painlessly as possible.
- Our News article contains 63 pages of New Function APARs, reminders about upcoming End-of-Service dates, pointers to important IBM announcement letters, links to helpful mainframe-related websites, information about upcoming conferences, and much more. If you work in a Z support role, there has to be something in there that will help you. In fact, to ensure that you get this information as quickly as possible, we will be emailing this article as a standalone PDF to all our Tuning Letter subscribers.
- Everyone loves our User Experiences and Tips articles. After all, who wants to waste time reinventing the wheel? This issue contains a reminder about CPENABLE changes, a pointer to an RFE to enhance the z/OSMF Software Management PSI install process, some observations on z15 upgrade paths, and some very timely information about COBOL V4 to V6 migrations.
