Winter 2023 SHARE Conference Is on Next Week

by | Mar 1, 2023 | Cheryl's List

The 2023 Winter SHARE conference will be held in the Atlanta Hyatt Regency hotel next week.  This is an abbreviated conference (3 full days – Monday to Wednesday), however there are more sessions on Sunday than normal, so if you are attending check out the agenda to see if any of those Sunday sessions would be of interest to you.  Also, make sure to download the SHARE app for your phone – apart from the up-to-date technical agenda you can also use it to create your own agenda of the sessions you would like to attend.  It also has a map of the conference section of the hotel – invaluable if you like to arrive at your desired session before it ends 😊.

I (Frank) will be presenting or co-presenting a few sessions:

We have a special treat at this SHARE – Cheryl will be with us for Sunday and part of Monday. Someone said to me a few years back that “SHARE just isn’t SHARE without Cheryl” – well, she will be back in person, so if you are around please make sure to say hello.  But be aware that she had a shoulder replacement recently (part of her transformation to ‘Bionic Chery’ 😊), so no hugging!

Of course, with the recent preview of z/OS 3.1, there will be many interesting sessions to attend – some of the ones I will be attending are:

  • Sunday, 15:45, Hanover D, ‘Workload Management (WLM) Update for IBM Z and IBM z/OS’ by Andreas Henicke. This is always a valuable and informative session, and will be especially so with the recent announcement of the addition of AI to WLM’s processing.
  • Monday, 09:15, Hanover C, ‘MVS Program Opening and Spotlight Speaker’. With a new version of z/OS just previewed, this should be an interesting session.
  • Monday, 10:45, Hanover D, ‘MVSP Project Opening and WSC Hot Topics’, by Meral Temel, John Burg, and Brad Snyder. This is a ‘must-see’ session for us at every SHARE. With z16s available for the last 9 months it will be interesting to see if they have any customer experiences or tips.
  • Monday, 13:15, Hanover C, ‘What’s New in z/OS V2R5: The Big Peach Edition’, by Gary Puchkoff. This is always a popular session, but with the recent preview of z/OS 3.1, we expect it will be standing room only – get there early to ensure a good seat.
  • Tuesday, 08:00, Hanover D, ‘Game Changer: Software Risk Assessment’, by Dawn Damore and Todd Gagle. Software Risk Assessment is becoming one of those ‘hot button’ issues with auditors and management. Todd kindly authored a Tuning Letter article on this topic recently, so I’ll be there to get up to speed on the latest developments.  If your not familiar with Software Risk Assessment, make sure to attend this session so you don’t have that deer-in-the-headlights look when your auditor asks you about it.
  • Tuesday, 09:15, Courtland, ‘JES2 Product Update’, by Tom Wasik. As Cheryl once observed, “I love Tom’s sessions. Every slide brings some new interesting information.”  If I wasn’t acting as referee at the Shootout, this is the session I would be attending.
  • Tuesday, 10:30, Hanover C, ‘Cyber Resilience for Enterprise Data – Protection From Logical Corruption’ by Beth Peterson. This is another hot button issue, and one guaranteed to cause many sleepless nights. This is a theme that we will be focusing on in the Tuning Letter this year.
  • Wednesday, 09:15, Greenbriar, ‘Infusing AI into z/OS’, by Andreas Henicke. If you read the z/OS 3.1 Preview you will have seen that one of the enhancements was the addition of AI to WLM, with the intent that it will be able to have the required resources available before the workload arrives, rather than reacting after the fact.  Considering how long it took to move customers from WLM Compatibility mode to Goal mode, I’m glad that Andreas is so young 😊.  This will definitely be an interesting topic in z/OS 3.1 and probably many more releases to come.
  • Wednesday, 09:15, Courtland, ‘I Didn’t Know You Could Do That with z/OS’, by Marna Walle. Marna is consistently one of the most popular presenters at SHARE, with an unmatched network in the IBM developer community, and a great feel for topics that are of interest to z/OS customers. We’re sure this session will contain many useful tidbits of information for attendees.
  • Wednesday, 16:00, Hanover D, ‘Diagnosing Transient Performance Issues by Analyzing SMF 98 and 100 Records in Zowe’, by Dan Rosa and Dan Weigand. We think the type 98 records contain a wealth of information that could be invaluable to performance analysts. Our concern has been with the level of expertise that is required to extract valuable insights from the information in the records, so it will be interesting to see the latest developments in this space.
  • Wednesday, 16:00, Greenbriar, ‘Hidden Treasures in z/OS, aka Bit Bucket x’41’’, by Art Gutowski, Ed Jaffe, Mike Shorkend, and Jerry Edgington. A visit to SHARE wouldn’t be complete without attending the famous Bit Bucket session.  These sessions are always full of valuable information you can put into practice as soon as you arrive home from SHARE.

Given the recent z/OS 3.1 preview, it is likely that there will be some session changes, so make sure to keep an eye on the agenda for interesting additions or if one of your selected sessions gets pulled.

If you are going to be at SHARE, please drop by one of my sessions to say hello.  We hope you have safe travels and an enjoyable conference.

Frank
