You all deserve a big hand of congratulations for the wonderful work you did getting ready for the Y2K cutover. Tom and I have long been in the group of supporters who believed that Y2K would NOT bring chaos and confusion to the world. And we don’t agree with the complainers today who say that it was all hype and companies were conned into spending fortunes on a worthless project.
I believe that chaos and confusion were averted BECAUSE of the effort and dedication you all put into your installations. I know that it took many overtime hours, lost weekends, family upsets, and many other sacrifices. I only hope that your management understands the effort you’ve expended. My hats off to you for a job VERY WELL DONE!
The main IBM Y2K problems had to do with DFSMS. You can read about the APARs on their Y2K page http://www.ibm.com/software/year2000/. The primary DFSMS Y2K APARs for OS/390 sites are: OW42560 (rmm);OW42637 and OW42602 (hsm); and OW42558.
2. Amdahl’s New Processors
On December 7th, Amdahl announced three new 1000 Family Servers, which correspond in capacity (although not in speed for two of the three) to IBM’s three Multiprise servers (mentioned in Cheryl’s List #32). These Amdahl Servers are expected to be eligible for GOLC pricing, and shipments begin this weekend. The three models with my estimates (not Amdahl’s) of MSUs and Processor Groups are shown below. Each 1000 Server ships with 4 engines installed (independent of model number). The 1015 and 1025 have at least one additional engine for non-disruptive upgrade or for use as an Internal Coupling Facility (for single-system Parallel Sysplex). Amdahl says that the advantages of their 1000 Servers over the Multiprise are their additional CPUs, their non-disruptive upgrade, the non-disruptive cut-in of a spare (in case of CP failure), a variety of memory options and more channels. 3. HFS and PDSE Update
In Cheryl’s List #35, I had the following item:
“In Cheryl’s List #33, I said that IBM will issue a system center flash that will provide the APAR numbers to provide support for HFS and PDSE files on non-SMS volumes. The flash has not been issued yet, but an APAR is available for tracking. Keep track of APAR OW35441 (current target date of 12/31/99).”
The APAR (with several Child APARs) closed on January 9th and the PTFs are now available, although the flash has not yet been issued. Also see APAR OW39951 for ISPF. I’d be interested in hearing the results from anyone who tries this new feature.
4. Neat Personal News
On New Year’s Eve, Tom asked me to marry him. I was absolutely thrilled (and of course, said ‘Yes’)! He is truly the finest human being I have ever met and I feel very lucky to have him in my life. We’ve had a wonderful 14 years together so far and are looking forward to many, many, more years. We’re currently planning a small family wedding (5 people) in San Francisco in April, followed by a honeymoon in Taiwan. Life just couldn’t get any better than this!
